VILLEGLE Jacques (1926-2022) SATOR, 1997. Original silkscreen in 3 colours, signed and dated in pencil at the bottom right and numbered 100/100 at the bottom left. Published in Annonay by Jean-Pierre Huguet for the Artothèque du GAC (Contemporary Art Group), on the occasion of a solo exhibition by Jacques Villeglé. Dimensions: 65 X 50 cm. In good condition. Sold framed (black aluminium frame, used condition) or unframed. Publisher's presentation: "This print is a reinterpretation of the letters from the famous 'Sator Square', a Latin palindrome that was found among the graffiti of Pompeii. It can be read in all directions and reveals the phrase 'Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas', one of the meanings of which is 'The farmer Arepo uses the wheels as a form of work'. By using his sociopolitical alphabet, Villeglé aims to connect with the realities of the world by highlighting certain prominent imprints. He refers us to history as well as to daily life. He speaks to us not only of peace (letter O), religion (t: Golgotha X A: Star of David), victory, tolerance, money (S: US dollar), but also of shock, struggle (A anarchic X E and N: the three arrows of the former socialist party), conflict, danger (O: bomb). Each person can interpret the sociopolitical graphics according to the value and power they attribute to these signs, based on their culture, instinctive reaction, curiosity, or questioning in the face of this work." Verbatim: "It is a redaction of Roman writing with signs." Jacques Villeglé. Transcription: "For thirty years, graffiti have redacted wall typography. The A's are circled, the O's cut into four, the S's, the I's striped. The V's starry, the squash of the G's, the inverted Soviet sickle, stitched with the hammer, the doubled S's inscribed like two parallel lightning bolts… These politico-economic ideograms from the urban underbelly, emblematic writings of our concerns...".
