He studied architecture at the Senior State Commercial and Technical School in Brünn (now Brno, Czech Republic). After working for a year in Würzburg, Germany, he moved to Vienna, where he remained until his death. There he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, under Karl von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner between 1892 and 1895. From 1896 to 1897 he worked in Wagner's studio. He was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists (including Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, and others) who promoted an experimental and modern artistic approach. All of Hoffmann's contributions to Secession exhibitions were influenced by the Art Nouveau style, and helped her to become known. In 1899 he was appointed professor at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, until his retirement in 1936. He teaches metalworking, enamel and applied arts. Around 1900, Hoffmann became a proponent of the gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) approach, and this was reflected in his projects.
