Antique French Terre de Fer Floral Compotier – c.1890–1910

This is one of those pieces that has achieved something modern ceramics spend an enormous amount of effort trying to imitate: It actually looks old. A beautiful antique French Terre de Fer pedestal compotier, decorated in a wonderfully faded wine-red/burgundy transfer print of oversized flowers and curling foliage. The central floral spray is surrounded by an ornate repeating border, with the decoration continuing rather charmingly around the foot. Originally a table-serving piece for fruit, cakes or desserts, today it would be equally lovely piled with figs, pears or walnuts — or simply sitting on a dresser doing absolutely nothing useful whatsoever. Which, after more than a century of service, seems entirely reasonable. And this one has proper antique patina. There is extensive fine crazing throughout the glaze, along with warm cream/biscuit discolouration, staining and age-related variation. The burgundy transfer decoration has softened and worn in places, particularly through the central design and around the rim. There also appears to be a fine hairline visible from the underside near the outer edge.
