Four-panel Japanese-style screen in red and gold lacquer.

A folding screen made up of 4 panels, in dark red lacquered paint, decorated with gold highlights in slight relief representing mountains and hills. Very good condition. Late 19th to early 20th century. In the background, hand-painted, numerous pagodas, rivers, trees and shrubs, and scenes of daily life. All the panels are richly decorated, both in the centre and around the edges. At the back, the screen is black, with hand-painted golden patterns. The true yellow and pale gold are grouped in pairs with hinges, allowing them to be secured together as one single screen using two vertical pins that fit together somewhat like door hinges, certainly the original fastening system. The feet are metal-bound. A few rare chips on the edges. 4 panels measuring 183 X 45.5 cm each. When unfolded, approximately 1.9 m wide. Thickness when folded: 10.5 cm. Thickness for one panel: 2.4 cm. Approximately 28 kg. Dimensions: H183 X W182 X D3.
