Kuba mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Ceremonial wooden mask-helmet from the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, decorated with fabric and leather, richly adorned with cowrie shells, polychrome beads, and plant fibres (probably raffia). This type of mask was worn entirely on the head during ritual ceremonies, possibly related to initiation or funeral rites. Beautiful patina from use, wear consistent with age and ritual use.
