Salomonson's peasant chair or more precisely the culemborg chair for goed wonen, is based on a tradition from the mid-nineteenth century that begun with morris & co's reinterpretation of the sussex chair and was adopted in the netherlands (1905) by willem penaat, among others. During the period of these chairs manufacture french designers like charlotte perriand were also achieving their own interpretations of 'land furniture' and in italy gio ponti was interpreting the italian traditional chiavari chair with his 'superleggera' chair (1951). All these post war chairs interpreted traditional chairs into completely new modern style icons of the period.
