Curved commode in Louis XV style - Europe, 20th century

This curved chest of drawers with three drawers directly references French Rococo: curved lines, local asymmetries absorbed into a generally symmetrical composition, shells, scrolls, acanthus leaves, cabriole legs, and figural mounts. However, this piece is not a Louis XV period chest of drawers. It belongs to the long legacy of historical styles. An examination of its construction more likely places its manufacture in Europe during the third quarter of the 20th century. The case features a bombé front and undulating sides, extended by four short, cabriole legs. The three wide drawers occupy the entire front. The veneer, in a range of honey browns, is arranged in geometric frieze. The overall effect is dense and deliberately theatrical. The removable top is made of light natural marble, veined with grey, beige, and ochre. Its moulded edge precisely follows the curved line of the structure. This type of furniture, well represented in the European market, is distinguished in this example mainly by its dimensions, the continuity of the frieze on the sides, and the abundance of its mounts. The chest of drawers is stable. The three drawers slide freely, and all three locks are present. The preserved old key is broken and non-functional. The overall condition is good, with some localized veneer losses, slight undulations on the sides, micro-imperfections in the marble, and variable oxidation of the mounts. — Dimensions: H. 83 × W. 116 × D. 60 cm.
