This very beautiful salt-glazed stoneware jug from Alsace, turned, decorated with cobalt blue and a dark grey leaning towards green, and glazed on the outside, will be as decorative as it is practical! Its simple and modern lines make it a lovely piece that is very contemporary, and with its wide neck, it is easy to clean. It can be used to serve water at the table, filled with a large bouquet of flowers (very stable and heavy), or displayed as a decorative piece in its own right. Moreover, it is very sturdy as the stoneware is thick and stable with its wider base. It does not come from the renowned Schmitter workshop in Betschdorf as I initially thought, but, as a contact in that workshop kindly informed me, it comes from the other workshop... the Roger Edmond Schmitter workshop, which is quite a coincidence; ) a competing workshop of the same name in the same village, but this one has been closed for about twenty years. The person who replied even kindly dated it for me! It would date from the 1980s. It has two stamps underneath ("Roger Schmitter – Grès d’Alsace" and "Véritable grès au sel, Betschdorf, Alsace") as well as a hand-engraved recessed marking "fait main 1.5 litres" and its original silver paper label on the jug (illegible). It is in perfect condition, neither cracked nor chipped, like new! It measures 21 cm in height, 15 cm in diameter at the base, 12.5 cm in diameter at the opening, and 20 cm in width from the handle to the spout. It weighs approximately 1.7 kg.
