Hand-painted ecru and orange Staffordshire earthenware dog depicting a seated Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, head turned to the left, wearing a collar decorated with a padlock and a leash. Highly prized at the Victorian court, this dog was often presented in pairs on the mantelpieces of bourgeois English homes in the 19th century. According to an anecdote, the position of the dogs at the window indicated the presence or absence of the man of the house. This dog, in very good condition, has an authentic patina with some traces of age and slightly cracked enamel.
