Small antique Chinese painted wooden furniture – China, around 1900

This small antique Chinese wooden cabinet, painted with a door, a drawer, and brass pull rings, is a piece of domestic storage from northern China around 1900. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing period, where red paint was the usual finish for everyday items. Small cabinets with doors and drawers were common functional pieces in Chinese homes during the Qing period. They served as bedside tables or storage for personal items in compact spaces. The case is made of solid wood with mortise and tenon joints. The upper door features a brass pull ring; the lower drawer does as well. The original red lacquer is partially preserved, especially on the door and sides. The patina combines the residual red of the lacquer with the dark tone of the aged wood.
