This particular artistic print – Ocean Waves and Sun by Momoyogusa (circa 1909–1910) by Kamisaka Sekka – illustrates why he is regarded as the master of the modern Rinpa style. The composition features a powerful series of deep indigo waves, soft off-white, and subtle sandy tones, with a round, slightly radiant sun behind the foaming waves. Sekka combines the simplicity of traditional Japanese aesthetics with the freshness of early 20th-century design, making the image both classic and modern. The wave symbolises changing energy, movement, and the constant force of nature. The sun represents rest, clarity, and a new beginning. Together, they bring a balance between dynamism and silence – a theme appreciated in Japanese art that immediately conveys a sense of harmony and attention to space. The reduction to pure forms creates an almost meditative appearance typical of Sekka's later works. The print is exclusively produced for Bij de Tijd in a French workshop, on high-quality 220G matte laid paper. This light ivory and textured paper has a subtle line texture reminiscent of classic art prints. The combination of this paper and the rich colour recipe ensures a luxurious and timeless appearance that particularly shines in modern, Japandi, minimalist, and eclectic interiors.
