Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom right. Inside a study, with thick stone walls and a vaulted ceiling, simple furniture but a library filled with volumes, a monk is seated at his work table, in front of a manuscript. Jeno Kemendy, a Hungarian painter and decorator, mainly focused on genre scenes, often set in periods prior to his own historical time. His expertise as a decorator is also evident in this painting, in the attention to detail in the decor and the theatrical pose of the man. The work shows slight paint losses. It is presented in a period frame.
