Cats Cradle Armchair LKR Charles & Ray Eames / Alexander Girard Herman Miller 1953

The Eames wire LKR 'Cats Cradle' chair is one of Eames' most memorable and unusual designs. This chair was available with a removable cover, a one-piece version and the two-piece “Bikini” version as on this example. The Cats Cradle base has also been marketed with a fiberglass arm-chair shell, but never with a fiberglass side-chair shell. This LKR comes to us in its black finish and its original Bikini cover. It is in very good condition, without any repairs or welding. The bikini cover is worn, but it is the original that came with the chair. The Bikini is covered in “Tweed”, a fabric created by Alexander Girard. It obviously has to stay with the chair, but it could very well be replaced with a reproduction to be able to use the Cats Cradle chair while keeping the original. This chair was purchased from the daughter of the original owner, who acquired it in 1953. The couple had built a modernist home in upstate New York and purchased the Cats Cradle and a Herman Miller Rocking Chair when they moved in. . Their daughter was born in 1953 and she shared photos of herself in that chair at just 5 days old and 2 years old! Copies of the photographs in file format will be provided to the purchaser of the chair. The original Herman Miller label is present under the bikini upholstery, the jute back means that it was produced before 1957. Cats Cradle wire chairs are very rare and sought after.
