Antique Japanese storage chest in sugi cedar - Meiji–Taishō period (c. 1890–1920)

Antique Japanese storage chest with a removable lid, made from sugi wood (Japanese cedar) and dated between the end of the Meiji period and the beginning of the Taishō period, circa 1890–1920. This type of Japanese storage chest, known as nagamochi / funabako, was traditionally used in households to store textiles, clothing, or personal items. Its simple and robust structure protected the contents from dust and moisture. The piece is made from sugi (Japanese cedar), a lightweight and aromatic wood commonly used in traditional Japanese carpentry. Sugi offers good resistance to moisture, making it ideal for textile storage. The top lid is removable, allowing easy access to the inside of the chest. This system was common in Japanese domestic chests. The surface shows a natural patina with signs of use, developed over time. These marks contribute to the authenticity of antique Japanese furniture.
