Important reception armchair in carved wood, made in France around the mid-19th century, in the neo-Renaissance style, blending medieval references and decorative vocabulary inspired by the Henri II style. The solid wood structure features very fine work of sculpture in the round and in high relief. The armrests rest on figures of stylised chimeras or dragons, belonging to the medieval bestiary cherished by 19th-century romanticism. The base rests on four twisted and wrapped legs, typical of the Renaissance reinterpretations of this period, connected by a sculpted crossbar decorated with scrolls and fantastic heads. The wide, curved volute armrests enhance the monumental character of the seat. The backrest, with a straight upper crossbar, is centred with an oval medallion framed by sculpted mouldings. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a later fabric, harmoniously chosen, respecting the historical spirit of the armchair without altering its reading. The structure retains its traditional upholstery with visible straps underneath, attesting to an old manufacture and quality design. The wood's patina is even and deep, revealing use and time without major alteration. This armchair fully fits into the French historicist production of the 19th century, intended for bourgeois or scholarly interiors, lovers of medieval and Renaissance references. It constitutes a character piece, both decorative and sculptural, capable of structuring a space on its own. Characteristics: Period: circa 1840–1860. Origin: France.
