A crystal vase from the 1930s, produced by the Moser glassworks in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, is an example of refined craftsmanship from the Art Deco era. The entire piece is made of thick, heavy crystal with a transparent, cool shade and a subtle greenish-grey tone characteristic of lead crystal from that period. The massive flared bowl rests on a precisely cut, polygonal base, and the distinct geometric faceting creates the harmony of symmetry and sharp lines typical of the Art Deco style. The hand-finished, highly polished surface brings out the play of light on the numerous vertical and diagonal cuts. Each cut is distinct and predictably even, and the signature on the bottom confirms its authenticity from Moser. The vase is in very good condition – no visible chips, cracks, or signs of repair; the surface remains clear and highly glossy. The form of this vase – soaring yet balanced – evokes the atmosphere of the 1930s, when decorativeness and functionality intertwined in the spirit of modernism. The geometry of the cuts tells of an era that valued clarity and the luxury of material; the play of light dancing on the facets brings to mind the elegant interiors of representative salons, where transparent crystal served as a small architectural sculpture. And although it has retained its original shine, a subtle note of patina in the glass material shows noble aging – a quiet dialogue with past decades. This vase can be displayed alone on a console or sideboard, where daylight and artificial light will highlight its sculptural form. It works well in both classic arrangements from the 1920s and 1930s, where combined with other geometric elements it will emphasize the Art Deco flair, and in contemporary interiors – in contrasting proximity to minimalist wood or metal, against a background of subdued colours. It is worth combining it with other glass or metal details of geometric form or – for a more striking effect – pairing it with a single branch or flower to emphasize the purity and monumentality of its lines.
