Wassily armchair by Marcel Breuer for Gavina. This iconic model was created by Marcel Breuer in 1925 during his time as director of the Bauhaus carpentry workshop in Dessau, Germany. He was inspired to create it by his Adler bicycle, fascinated by its design and the lightness of its tubular steel frame. Luckily, he was able to take advantage of the new technique developed by the Mannesmann company, which made it possible to produce seamless steel tubes. Innovative in its materials and technique, this design has endured over time thanks to a succession of manufacturers, starting with the famous German-Austrian company Thonet, which took charge of its production until the beginning of the Second World War. At that time, it was not named Wassily but B3. It was only after the war, when the Italian company Gavina took over production, that it named itself after the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky, who attended the same school. The designer, after hearing his classmate's praise for his new creation, decided to create a copy for his private quarters. It was in 1968 that Knoll International bought Gavina. The Wassily armchair was thus included in the catalog and is still produced to this day. The frame is composed of 5 round, bent, and chrome-plated steel tubes. Assembled by a screw system and held in place by leather strips creating a suspension effect. The base has 4 plastic glides to prevent friction with the floor. In very good condition, professionally cleaned, refurbished, and upholstered in leather. Not all chairs from the early years were labeled or embossed. 2 armchairs available.
