Large Iron-Covered Chest, Rajasthan, Trunk on 4 Wooden Wheels, India. Asia, 19th Century. Large Indian chest made of exotic wood covered with ironwork. The top is domed and opens two-thirds of the way with a forged iron hinge, revealing a large storage space traditionally used for linen, and a transverse compartment at the upper left. Both sides, the back, and the lid are covered with rounded iron bands. The entire piece rests on four wooden wheels. The closure is secured by a hasp and a chiselled iron latch. This superb chest dates from the late 19th century to the very early 20th century and comes from the Rajasthan region in North West India. This type of chest was often given by the family as a dowry for a marriage. Handcrafted, this chest has some imperfections in its proportions, particularly at the back, which is slightly inclined (see last photo), adding to its authenticity. Waxed finish, with signs of wear due to its use and age.
