Jorge Pensi, born in Buenos Aires in 1946, initially studied architecture in his hometown before moving to Barcelona in 1975. There, along with designer Alberto Liévore and art theorists Norberto Chaves and Oriol Pibernat, he founded the avant-garde collective "Berenguer, " named after the eponymous square in Barcelona. In 1984, Pensi opened his own studio in Barcelona, where he focused on developing innovative aluminium furniture. In 1986, Jorge Pensi introduced the Toledo chair made of aluminium. This model made a splash in the design world and brought the designer international fame. Originally designed for Spanish cafés, the lightweight and stackable nature of the Toledo chair quickly made it appealing for conference rooms. The characteristic slits in the seat and backrest are a distinctive stylistic element. Pensi drew his inspiration for this design from the armour of Japanese samurai warriors.
