Large Thonet bentwood stool, probably from the first half of the 20th century. In beautiful restored condition. The stool is made of bent beech wood and has a second bentwood ring under the seat for extra stability. Michael Thonet developed this construction principle and applied it to several of his chairs and stools. The seat is made of slightly curved plywood. The surfaces of the stool are covered with shellac. The stool has the Thonet stamp embossed in the seat frame as well as the paper label. The stool is in good overall condition: all screws are tight, nothing wobbles and the surfaces have been sanded, stained (dark walnut) and hand varnished with traditional Schellack ball varnish. The seat still has slight dents and scratches under the paint - see video. A beautiful collector's item and design classic, these stools are still produced today in a similar form by Thonet - new price from €500.00.
