Vintage service platter Mappin & Webb Silver plated Diameter 35 cm

Magnificent round serving tray specially commissioned by the prestigious British manufacturer Mappin & Webb Ltd for the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISN Co Ltd). BISN Co Ltd = British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd, a famous British shipping company (1856–1972), specialising in the India-Asia-East Africa routes, merged with P&O. This piece is an authentic testament to maritime history: it was custom-made to equip the liners and cargo ships of this great British company that connected England to India, East Africa, and the Far East. Manufacturer: Mappin & Webb Ltd, England (holder of the Royal Warrant) Date: Circa 1956 (date letter "J" in a heraldic shield on the reverse) Hallmarks on the reverse: "MAPPIN & WEBB LTD", diamond, shield with "J", model number "W20235", "E.T" Elegant border with a concentric wavy pattern. In the centre, a finely engraved cartouche with the company insignia "BISN CO LTD" surrounded by a stylised belt – the characteristic marking of BISN's tableware. Mappin & Webb supplied high-end plated tableware to major shipping companies. This tray was specially made for BISN Co Ltd and was intended for dining salons or officers' messes on their ships. A rare piece sought after by collectors of liner memorabilia and maritime history. Good vintage condition with a lovely patina of age. The tray shows surface scratches and normal signs of wear due to decades of use at sea (an authentic serving piece, not a new example). The central engraving remains clear and legible.
