Gilt bronze pilgrim's cross, also known as the Caravaca Cross, dating from the 18th century. The iconography depicts the miracle of the cross's appearance at Caravaca. According to tradition, the Caravaca Cross belonged to Patriarch Robert, the first bishop of Jerusalem, which was conquered from the Muslims during the First Crusade (1099). The cross miraculously appeared in Caravaca, Spain, near Murcia, on May 3, 1232. Caravaca then became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe, and replicas for pilgrims were subsequently produced. Very good overall condition, in its original state. Dimensions: H 15cm x W 8.5cm x Thickness approx. 0.7cm. Careful and fast shipping.
