"Karaté" armchair and its ottoman by Michel Cadestin for Airborne, c. 1970

French work, c.1970. Armchair H 95 X W 95 X D 100 cm; ottoman D 74 X H 45 cm. Fibreglass shell, leather. Good condition, leather has patina, wear on the edge of the seat. A single-piece moulded shell, lacquered white, with an enveloping backrest and resting on a conical base. Inside, there are black leather upholstered cushions, secured with buttons. The ottoman features the same base and upholstery. Michel Cadestin, born in 1942, designed the Karaté for Airborne in the early 1970s. The Landes publisher, which was then producing Olivier Mourgue's Djinn, combines here a moulded plastic shell with upholstered leather padding — two styles that French furniture of that era typically kept separate. The set includes the armchair and its ottoman, which are often sold separately. The leather has developed a patina, and the wear on the edge of the seat is visible in close-up views.
