Folk chest made of carved solid beech wood, originating from Transylvania (Romania), circa 1880-1900. These chests were part of the traditional domestic furniture of the Carpathian region, used for storing textiles and personal items. Their utilitarian function was accompanied by a strong cultural identity expressed through their decorations. The structure is made of solid beech, a dense and durable wood. The front is adorned with hand-carved geometric patterns—intersecting lines, chevrons, and structured bands—typical of the Transylvanian vernacular style. The thick lid with a lateral overhang reflects traditional construction techniques, as do the original wrought iron handles. The low proportions emphasise its functional character. The surface features a warm natural patina, with signs of use, small marks, and variations in colour that enhance its authenticity. Today, this type of piece is sought after as a sculptural object in contemporary interiors, particularly in wabi, primitive, or rustic modern settings. Details.
