This ancient chest carved from pine wood features a flat geometric sculpture with diamond patterns and stylised branches covering the entire front and sides. The lid opens with upper hinges and a wrought iron latch. It originates from Transylvania, in the Carpathian region, from the late 19th century, where pine was worked using a mortise and tenon joint and decorated with gouge carving. In the folk furniture of the Carpathians and Transylvania, carved chests were central pieces of the peasant dowry. They were used to store clothing, home-woven textiles, and personal items. The dense geometric carving—diamonds, lines, stylised branches—was part of the regional decorative vocabulary, distinct from the polychrome painting of contemporary Austrian or German furniture. The body is constructed from solid pine with wide boards and visible ends. The structure is a closed rectangular volume with a drop-down lid mounted on wrought iron hinges. The front closure is a simple iron latch. The carving was done with a gouge directly into the thickness of the wood, without added paint or pigment, allowing natural aging to mark the design.
