Oil on canvas. Northern Italian school of the 17th-18th century. In a vast, rather arid hilly landscape that widens and fades to the right, a tall rock in the shape of an arch rises, beneath which stands Saint Jerome the Penitent, depicted in an act of prayer and adoration of the Cross. In accordance with the canons of 17th-18th century painting, the figure of the Saint, adapted to the iconography in his clothing and posture, is nonetheless placed in an unsuitable landscape, reminiscent of the painter's own familiar surroundings. The painting, restored and re-canvas, is presented in a period frame.
