HENRI REBOA (active Marseille, mid-20th century) Pitcher, fabrics, oranges. Circa 1960. Gouache on heavy paper. 52 x 38 cm (gouache) 63.5 x 49 cm (sheet) Signed: H. REBOA Henri Reboa was a Marseille painter of Spanish origin, associated with the Peintres du Péano (Painters of Péano), and known for his bold and colorful gouaches. Péano was a café in Marseille's Old Port where artists, poets, and journalists gathered, and was at the heart of bohemian life in Marseille from the 1940s to the 1970s. The work of these painters, marked by the light and contrasts of the Mediterranean, is distinguished by its bold use of color and a direct, graphic style. Reboa's gouaches were highly regarded in the 1950s and 1960s, a period during which he was a key figure in the Peano art scene. In his gouaches, Reboa always included a frame line as part of the composition, and the artwork should be framed around it.
