This papier-mâché creation features a polychrome relief decoration depicting two stylised birds framing a central mirror, topped with an anthropomorphic sun. The lower part is adorned with a frieze of stylised fish, an emblematic theme of the Mediterranean universe developed by Les Argonautes. It was made during the workshop's active period (1953-1976). The workshop, founded by Françoise Bourguet, known as Frédérique (1925-1998), and Isabelle Rose Ferlay (1917-2009), is renowned for its poetic works with free decorations, all entirely handmade. Each creation has its own variations in shapes, colours, and patterns, giving each piece a unique character. The back bears the handwritten inscriptions "Les Argonautes Vallauris" and "Unique piece," attesting to the individual nature of this work. Wooden support and papier-mâché decoration. Condition: very good overall condition. Some slight signs of age and small visible stains on the mirror, without affecting the presentation of the work. Dimensions: 15 X 15 cm. Thickness: 2.5 cm. Weight: 280 g. A rare decorative work representative of the artistic production of Les Argonautes, an emblematic workshop of the creative revival of Vallauris in the second half of the 20th century. Its iconography, combining birds, sun, and fish, perfectly illustrates the free and Mediterranean aesthetic that has made this workshop sought after by collectors.
