Pair of Impressionist paintings Oil on canvas Dutch marine

Hello, I am offering a pair of paintings that are particularly representative of Northern Romanticism. These two works from the 1820s/30s revive the golden age of Dutch marine art while adding a dramatic atmosphere. The first painting depicts a controlled nature with a calm sea and the work of sailors - this embodies the concept of the "picturesque", while the second painting shows a wild nature - representing the Romantic concept of the "sublime". This thematic contrast between the two works was highly sought after in the bourgeois collections of the 19th century. This pair of paintings constitutes two beautiful variations on the theme of coastal life from the past. The first painting, tinged with "morning mist", emphasises the horizontality of the beach, the majesty of the ships, and a subtle harmony of grey-green tones. The second painting, set in an "imaginary twilight", plays on verticality with its steep cliff and windmill against the colourful glow of a romantic evening sky. At that time, German-Dutch painters were fascinated by the rugged reliefs of the North Sea. The rocky island of HELIGOLAND, located off the coast of Germany, was often frequented by artists from Northern Europe and featured high, steep red cliffs amidst a turbulent sea. Since 26 June 2009, certain sites of the Wadden Sea in GERMANY, the NETHERLANDS, and DENMARK have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
