This exquisite pair of modernist armchairs was designed by Louis Sognot for the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1927. They feature exposed walnut legs, a gently curved backrest, and a distinctly modernist seat. They have been fully reupholstered in off-white alpaca velvet from Dedar. The combination of clean, flowing lines is truly elegant. Photographs of the complete restoration, along with documentation, are available upon request. Louis Sognot was a French designer and decorator, a leading figure in the Art Deco movement and modern design. Trained at the École Bernard Palissy in Paris, he began his career as a draftsman at the Jansen firm before dedicating himself entirely to furniture design. In 1920, he joined Primavera, which he co-directed with Charlotte Chauvet-Guilleré until 1930. From its inception in 1930, he was a member of the Union of Modern Artists (UAM). In the 1920s and 1930s, he distinguished himself with his elegant and functional furniture, blending modern materials such as tubular metal, glass, and light wood. His work, at the crossroads of art and industry, reflects the search for a balance between artisanal refinement and rational modernity. Sognot was one of the key figures in the transition from Art Deco to contemporary French design. Literature: Anne Bony, Louis Sognot, Éditions du Regard, Paris, 2024, model reproduced on page 35; P. Follot, Interieurs, Paris, 1937, plate 10; The Studio Year Book of the Decorative Art Journal, London, 1928, model reproduced on page 98.
