This pair of wrought iron andirons illustrates one of the most distinctive and technically demanding techniques in the traditional blacksmith's repertoire: the spiral cage or lantern shape. Each post is constructed like a pierced cage made of twisted iron bars, with the vertical elements wrapping around a central axis to create a structure that appears both light and solid, its geometric regularity providing a counterpoint to the organic curves of the scroll feet. The cage posts are topped with large polished brass balls — a finishing touch that introduces a material contrast typical of high-quality French ironwork from the 1960s–1970s, where the combination of blackened wrought iron and polished brass was highly valued for its warm aesthetic effect. The bases are formed of double scroll feet in wrought iron, with the volutes curling outward to ensure a stable and decoratively appropriate support. Dating from around 1970, this pair belongs to the tradition of high-quality French artisanal ironwork that continued to employ traditional blacksmithing techniques — twisting, scrolling, and riveting — in the production of durable domestic fireplace accessories.
