Water jug, modernism, amethyst glass, designed by W. Sarnecki, Poland, 1970s

A cylindrical water jug designed in the 1970s by Wszewłod Sarnecki for Huta Krosno, made of deep amethyst purple coloured glass. The surface texture, reminiscent of tree bark or hammered glass, gives the item a distinctive structure, making it practical and easier to grip. The form is elongated and slender, with a smoothly integrated, slightly rounded handle made of glass in the same colour. The rim and spout are minimalist, undecorated, and gently rounded. The proportions of the vessel emphasise vertical lines – the height clearly exceeds the diameter, and the colour gradually darkens towards the base. The style of the item fits into the modernist search for geometric, bold forms and experiments with coloured and textured glass characteristic of Polish design of the 1970s. Condition: very good – no visible damage, all original features and finishes have been preserved. This jug tells the story of an era that valued both experimentation and functionality. In the 1970s, the domestic school of design sought ways to make everyday life more expressive – hence the bold glass, soft geometry, and subtle play of light.
