Antique French painted shop commode, poplar and pine, circa 1850–1900

Antique French shop commode from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1850–1900. Made of poplar and pine, the commode features seven drawers of three different sizes, providing generous and practical storage space. The profiled side supports and turned wooden knobs reflect its provincial origins and functional design. The commode retains a beautifully patinated painted finish, revealing a rich palette of old colours, including deep burgundy, dusty pink, muted mauve, earthy brown, charcoal black, and exposed natural wood. Decades of use have worn the successive layers of paint, creating an authentic patina that makes each surface unique. Originally used in a workshop or shop, this piece is equally suitable for a living room, hallway, bedroom, or commercial interior, where it offers both storage and character.
