Lustre with pendants and glass fruits, Maison Baguès, six lights

Elegant six-light cage chandelier, Maison Baguès, combining the decorative vocabulary that has made the famous Parisian house renowned: patinated wrought iron structure, gilded tin foliage, and rich adornment of pendants and glass fruits. The frame, formed of curved wrought iron uprights with a dark patina gathered in a cage, is topped with gilded foliage scrolls. The volute light arms hold gilded tin bobeches with scalloped edges, crystal cups, and porcelain opaline candles. The central shaft is adorned with a cut crystal dagger. The decoration combines cut crystal pendants with facets, colourless, amber, and smoky, almond-shaped plates, rosettes, and small flowers in moulded glass, as well as charming glass fruits: clusters of amethyst and amber grapes, pears, and a round smoky glass fruit topped with a leaf for support. The whole offers a play of colours and reflections of great cheerfulness, both by day and when lit. Period: early 20th century.
