A pair of baluster vases in purple crystal attributed to Auguste Jean (1829-1896), late 19th century. Enamelled decoration of flowering branches in a Japonisme style, symmetrical motif. Poly-lobed neck, stretches and hot applications of wavy ribbons. Chips on the feet of both vases. Auguste Jean's glassworks were first noted at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he received a bronze medal. He offered pieces of coloured glass in classic forms, but complicated by projections and reliefs, achieved through working the glass mass with tongs, hot, which would become his distinctive mark.
