Overview. Set of five original Biedermeier shovel chairs from Thuringia, Germany, circa 1830. Characteristic restrained Biedermeier silhouette with simple, elegant lines. Materials. Constructed in cherry wood with book-matched veneer on the shovel and apron. Solid cherry wood frame and legs with an ebonized top rail; seats finished in black fabric. Design. Open back with horizontal slats and gently curved crest rail typical of the period. Slender, tapered front legs and slightly splayed rear legs for balanced proportions. Dimensions.
