Very beautiful small oil painting on cardboard depicting a scene from the French countryside, dating from the 1920s. It is signed at the bottom left F. Marks for Ferdinand Louis Marks. Painter and watercolourist, Ferdinand Marks was born in 1861 in Bayeux (14) and died in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1943. He lived in Metz. He was the brother of Albert Marks and the father of Ferdinand Marks (son), who were also painters. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1884 and 1891. This painting represents a rural scene: in a very wooded landscape, where a field can be discerned, a little girl in a blue school smock is reading (👉the blue smock is typical of French schoolchildren in the early 20th century). She is probably looking after the cows once school is over and is keeping herself occupied by reading a good book! The colours and details in this scene are truly magnificent. The little girl, painted with just two brush strokes, is nonetheless extremely lively! The trees and abundant clouds immerse us in a spring afternoon. It is a remarkable work by a renowned French artist! Overall in good condition, please note: some signs of wear and age.
