Mattioli: Born in Bologna in 1933, Giancarlo Mattioli was a designer, architect, urban planner, portraitist, man, and Italian intellectual, who achieved great success in the 1950s and 1960s. A student at an art high school, he continued to cultivate his passion for pen drawing, inherited from his teachers. Graduating in architecture in Florence, he founded the urban architects' group "Città Nuova" in 1961 with Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato, and Mario Zaffagnini. In 1965, with "Città Nuova", he participated in the "Studio Artemide Domus di Milano" competition, organised by Artemide and Editrice Domus to explore new ways of designing lamps as lighting objects. The project presented was a lamp inspired by the shape of a jellyfish. Mattioli and the professionals of the Group worked on new methods to achieve soft ambient light through a device concealing the bulb. The project was successful, and the lamp, named Nesso, was produced from 1967. It became an emblem of design.
