An iconic piece of the post-war reconstruction programme, this low oak sideboard is signed by René Gabriel (1890-1950), a founding figure of French social design. Commissioned by the Ministry of Reconstruction to create the "Furniture for the Displaced", René Gabriel designed standardised pieces, made by local craftsmen, combining functionality and understated elegance. Today, these pieces are highly sought after by mid-century enthusiasts and authentic flea market lovers, carrying a unique history. Materials: oak (solid and veneer). Features: the sideboard offers a tripartite configuration typical of René Gabriel's furniture: it opens with two solid doors framing a central column of five drawers. Its legs are slightly flared, giving lightness and balance to the whole. Inside the cupboards, it is equipped with three shelves (fixed height), two on the left, one on the right. Renovation: this René Gabriel sideboard has undergone extensive renovation. It was sanded initially and then treated against wood-boring insects three times. It was then sanded again while preserving the patina of time on its wood. The drawers have been repaired and grafted. The doors no longer have locks, so magnets have been installed to ensure they close properly. Finally, the inside of the cupboards and drawers has been painted in Farrow & Ball's Plummett grey, as well as the (new) shelves. Condition: the piece is solid, stable on its feet, and healthy after treatment. It retains visible traces of wood-boring insects (inside). Dimensions: L153.5 X D46.5 X H92. Cupboards: L58 X D40.5 X H75. Drawers: L25 X H11.
