Italian art glass bowl with cobalt rim, gradient effect, 1970s

Italian formed glass bowl from the 1970s, distinguished by an intense cobalt rim that gradually transitions into clear glass. This piece embodies the aesthetic of Italian art glass from that decade: bold colour combinations paired with simplicity of form, where pigment becomes the primary compositional element. The construction follows a classic bowl shape with gently flared walls and a flat base. The transition between deep blue and transparent glass creates a gradient effect that lends the piece a sense of lightness despite the striking colour accent. The proportions—diameter nearly three times the height—emphasise the horizontal character of the form. Italian glass of the 1970s drew upon the heritage of Venetian furnaces while embracing influences from modern design. Italian manufacturers experimented with coloured glass forming, creating everyday objects with decorative qualities. The technique of combining clear glass with mass-coloured sections achieved effects impossible through other methods: colour became an integral part of the material rather than a surface coating. The bowl serves equally well as tableware or a decorative accent. Its seventeen-centimetre diameter makes it suitable for serving snacks, fruit, or confections, as well as holding small items on a dresser or shelf. Good condition. The bowl shows no significant flaws; it has retained full functionality and visual appeal.
