Chokwe Mask (or Tshokwe) from the Congo Basin. Type: Mwana Pwo Mask (or simply Pwo). Meaning: It represents the ideal female ancestor. Although carved and worn by men, it pays tribute to women and fertility. Aesthetic details: Scarifications: Geometric patterns can be seen on the forehead and cheeks. The cross on the forehead (called cingelyengelye) is a strong identity mark of the Chokwe. Eyes: They are often carved "coffee bean" style, half-closed, expressing a form of serenity or spirituality. Patina: Its dark and smooth colour often indicates prolonged use or specific treatment of the wood (oil, smoke).
