This ancient polychrome chest made of pine features a façade on a turquoise green background with compositions of peonies, chrysanthemums, and butterflies arranged in a unique decorative field framed by a geometric frieze. It originates from northern China, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, where the pine was crafted using dovetail joints and decorated with hand-applied paint on a coloured background. In traditional Chinese furniture, medium-sized painted chests were part of the domestic trousseau and often the bridal dowry. They were reserved for textiles, festive clothing, and personal items. The deep turquoise green, less common than vermilion red, was a popular choice in the folk furniture of northern and western China — a colour associated with spring, vegetation, and renewal. The body is constructed from solid pine, assembled with visible dovetail joints. The top lid is removable and lifts to provide access to the interior — a common solution in Chinese utility chests for domestic storage. The sides retain their original recessed handles for transport. The structure is entirely solid, and the hardware is functional. Details. Dimensions: Length 77 cm – Depth 54 cm – Height 55 cm.
