Classic yet always striking, these three Gien soup plates feature the magnificent “Thistle” motif in a deep navy blue. The motif, delicately printed at the end of the 19th century, illustrates the grace of great naturalistic French earthenware: each thistle flower is finely detailed, surrounded by a delicate floral frieze. The Gien factory, founded in 1821 on the banks of the Loire, is one of the most iconic in France. It distinguished itself during the Second Empire with its blue-decorated ironware, rivaling English earthenware of the same period. These plates demonstrate the refinement of this production: an intense blue, a crisp print, and that subtle ivory patina that only time can create. A harmonious trio for a table with old-world charm or a decorative wall arrangement. Stamped Gien Opaque Porcelain Chardons. Beautiful vintage condition, with slight cracking of the enamel, no chips or cracks, patina of age, some micro-scratches from use, and very slightly different shades (more or less dark). Diameter 22.5 cm. A classic piece of antique tableware, perfect for a chic table setting.
