Antique cedar wood desk – Japan, Taishō period, circa 1920
This antique sugi wood desk is a writing table with drawers. It originates from Japan, from the early 20th century, in utilitarian Japanese cedar furniture. These work desks populated offices, studies, and workrooms. Their simple and sturdy construction prioritises function over ornamentation. The body is made of Japanese cedar, featuring a central drawer and a side column of drawers. The legs are square in section, and the sides have vertical supports. The Japanese cedar, called "sugi," retains a warm patina and signs of use; one of the handles is not original. The surface appears authentic, without any restoration that obscures it. Today, it is used as a desk, console, or work table. It fits into rustic, industrial, and eclectic interiors, where it brings warmth and texture.
