This bahut or todana tansu is a fine Edo period storage piece (circa 1800 - 1850) made of keyaki wood. The style combines strength, sobriety, and Eastern influence (the discreet scrolls of the fittings and slight projections at the corners are characteristic of the Edo period). Condition: due to its age, this piece shows numerous signs of wear, scratches, dents, and small chips from use. A hole in the back has been covered by a wooden plate (see photo B) - one board of the top is slightly curved inwards (see photo marked A). The metal fittings are oxidised - keys are missing. There is a patina from use. The paper lining the drawers is from the Art Deco period, 1930. This piece embodies "wabi sabi, " a concept cherished by the Japanese: it is an aesthetic principle derived from Zen Buddhist ideas. Wabi signifies simplicity and melancholy - "sabi" refers to the alteration of time, the appreciation of aged things, and the patina of objects. Please feel free to ask questions. WARNING, I will be absent in August - I cannot deliver in August!!! Width 92 // Height 92 cm // Depth 46 cm (overall).
