Antique sideboard carved from pine wood, provincial Chinese furniture from the west, originating from Xinjiang and dated around 1900. It comes from Xinjiang in western China, from the late 19th century, where local pine was worked using traditional mortise and tenon joinery without nails, featuring fronts covered in dense relief carving. In rural Xinjiang homes, long sideboards served as communal storage furniture and as a structural visual piece in the main room. The density of the carving on their fronts documents the symbolic importance of the piece within the family heirloom. Constructed from solid pine using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, without nails. The front features eight parallel doors with circular iron latch handles, each resolved in a hollowed panel carved in relief with geometric latticework. The upper rail and sides continue the sculptural language. The top is finished with lobed protruding ends, and the piece rests on four square-section legs. Details.
