French soldier of the 351st Infantry Regiment who was actually called to fight at Verdun in 1917. The dust on his shoes and jacket suggests that this painting was done in the trenches while the soldiers were waiting for the offensives by another soldier artist. The background as well as the name of the artist were deliberately hidden due to the censorship that was imposed. The medals of this valiant soldier 1st class show that he obtained the Military Medal (1st medal with green border) as well as the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918. (palm and star) he must be of a certain age because the third medal alternating yellow and green bands is the Tonkin Annam China Medal, campaign of 1883 - 1886. Like many other regiments that fought on the Eastern Front, the 351st Regiment suffered heavy losses. The artist has vividly captured the reality of these men who sacrificed themselves so that we may be free. Dimensions: Height: 40 cm. Width: 30 cm.
