Superb set of four large antique English Wedgwood plates, from the Georgia Historical Plates commemorative series, made in England for the Transylvania Club of Sandersville, Georgia. Monochrome transfer decoration in a beautiful burgundy/mulberry colour, featuring a different historical scene at the centre of each plate and a rich border composed of flowers, fruits, monuments, and the seal of the State of Georgia. The four plates represent: John Wesley Teaching the Indians. Richmond Academy – Augusta, Georgia. Nancy Hart Capturing the Tories. Capitol – Atlanta, Georgia. Each plate bears the mark Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston – Made in England on the reverse, along with a description of the depicted scene. This historical series was originally created to commemorate the bicentennial of the State of Georgia and was specially produced by Wedgwood for the Transylvania Club. A beautiful set for a collection of English pottery, transferware, or for wall decoration. In very good overall condition. The decorations on the front are particularly well preserved, with no chips or cracks. A few very light signs of use are visible on the reverse, consistent with their age. Diameter: approximately 26.5 cm. Total weight: 2.4 kg.
