Antique iron-reinforced pine wood chest – China, circa 1900

This antique painted pine chest features a rectangular structure with a drop-down lid, wrought iron hinges and lock, and wrought iron reinforcements on edges and corners, with a central lock and white Chinese calligraphy painted on the front. It originates from northern China, dating from the end of the Qing dynasty, where the pine was crafted using a mortise and tenon joint and finished with polychrome paint on a natural lacquer background. This sturdy Chinese chest was intended for the storage and transport of goods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its wooden structure, reinforced with iron fittings, effectively protected its contents during transport by road, river, or rail, while the painted inscriptions allowed for the identification of the owner, trading company, or nature of the cargo.
