This beautiful decorative plate was made by the faïenceries of the city of moustiers, a small town in the basses-alpes, in france. From the end of the seventeenth century and throughout the eighteenth century, important factories produced in moustiers a large production of earthenware, including this type of plates. The most appreciated of these were the plates adorned, like this one, with "callots": so-called "grotesque" characters, in the creative vein of the humorous caricatures of commedia del arte by jacques callot, famous lorraine draftsman and engraver and recognized master of etching. The plates of moustiers were characterized by the alliance of italian and french influences: italian for their robustness, french for the delicacy of their motifs. Here the center of the plate is decorated with a figure in baggy trousers, feathered hat, sitting on a rock, a shepherd's staff in his hand and blowing in a foghorn. The rest of the plate is decorated with a delicate vegetal decoration. The entire decoration is painted by hand, that is to say freehand on the raw enamel, by applying with a brush colors based on oxides. A technique that dates from the eighteenth century precisely, and which allows the complete fusion of decoration and enamel to cooking. This traditional and artisanal method of manufacturing results in slight variations in terms of color and decoration, making each piece unique. The plate is protected by its glaze, which gives it this brilliance and reveals even more the colors of the patterns. Its edge is scalloped, that is, its edge is wavy. A beautiful object, which immediately ensures a beautiful presence on the walls of a living room. Its diameter is 26 cm and height is 3 cm. It weighs 560 gr., excluding transport packaging.
